The Department of Matallurgical and Materials Engineering was established in 1956. The Department offers B.Tech.The Department of Matallurgical and Materials Engineering at NIT Raipur is as old as institute itself. With sweet memories of foundation ceremony by Honourable president Dr. Rajendra Prasad on 14th Sep. 1956 and building opening ceremony by Pt. Jawaharlal Nehru, our First Prime Minister on 14th March 1963. The department of Metallurgy housed in the heart of magnificent building that has Towering head & strong long arms stretched East to West on the Northern side of G.E. Road. Year by year Metallurgy Engg. department become quite close to Bhilai steel Plant, BALCO, and many other industries. The students from this department became the twinkling stars of all the near by Metallurgy based plants, Mini-steel plants, national laboratories, Defence services. Bhabha Atomic Research Centre, HAL, BHEL, SAIL. Global consultants like Mecon, M.N. Dastur Co., Famous foundries, Forge shop, Heat treatment shop, Indian standard Institutes & Famous Educational Institutes along with dept. of Industries of state & centre thus covering the entire length & breadth of the country. Metallurgical Society (METSO) had a proud privilege in giving a helping hand, in organizing successfully the national Seminars - "Interdependence of large Metallurgical Plants & Auxillary units" on 7-9 Nov. 1981 & "Sponge Iron Technology Present Status & Future Prospects" on 12-13 Dec. 1996. It is the role of Metallurgical engineer to develop design and operate processes that transform these low value raw materials into useful high value mineral and metal products.

To become a pioneering Department in the country for teaching, research and consultancy in emerging areas of materials science and engineering while consolidating the Departments strength in traditional areas of metallurgical engineering. To provide a high quality education in Metallurgical Engineering with emphasis on student-centered research and scholarity activities, service to community and industry and professional practice in Metallurgical and all conducted in an environment that celebrates discovery and diversity.
